System State Restore and backing out a schema update

Hi, have tried searching the forum but cannot seem to find a definitive answer to this (or rather I'm finding conflicting answers).

My question is this - is it possible to 'reverse' a schema update by doing a System State Recovery in Directory Services Restore Mode on the Schema Master of a forest? My understanding is that if you take a System State Backup before doing the schema update, and then try to back it out using this technique it won't work, everything AD-related on the Schema Master would revert to as it was at the point the System State Backup was takenwith the exception ofthe schema which would retain the updates (new objects, attributes, etc.).

I appreciate there are other considerations, e.g. if the schema update has replicated to all DCs in the forest then they too would need to go through a restore process, but the key to the question is how to revert the Schema Master. I have been led to believe that a System State Restore in Directory Services Restore Mode is good for backing out any changes to AD except schema updates which requires either a specialist tool like Quest Forest Recovery Manager Edition orthe complete removal of AD from a server before restoring the system state backup. Basically if the schema partition exists on a DC, a System State Restore will not replace it.

Thanks in advance.
